Hexagram Statement

贞,丈人吉,无咎。

坚持正道,大人吉祥,不会有过失。

Perseverance. The elder man is fortunate. No blame.

Persist in the right way. The great man is auspicious, without fault.

Line 1

初六,师出以律,否臧凶。

初六爻,军队出征必须要有严明的纪律约束,不然的话,会有凶险。

Six at the beginning: An army must set forth in proper order. If the order is not good, misfortune.

First yin line: When the army goes forth, it must have strict discipline; otherwise, there will be danger.

Line 2

九二,在师中,吉,无咎,王三锡命。

九二爻,主师掌握军权,了解军队的实际情况,不会有过错。君王会因军功而赏赐主帅以爵位、服饰和车马。

Nine in the second place: In the midst of the army, good fortune. No blame. The king bestows a triple command.

Second yang line: The commander holds military power and understands the army's actual situation; no fault. The king will reward the commander with rank, robes, and chariots for military merit.

Line 3

六三,师或舆尸,凶。

六三爻,出征的军队鲁莽行动,可能会大败,死伤人员甚多,凶险。

Six in the third place: The army carries corpses in the wagon. Misfortune.

Third yin line: The army acts recklessly and may suffer great defeat, with many dead and wounded; danger.

Line 4

六四,师左次,无咎。

六四爻,军队退却,没有过错。

Six in the fourth place: The army retreats. No blame.

Fourth yin line: The army withdraws; no fault.

Line 5

六五,田有禽,利执言,无咎。长子帅师,弟子舆尸,贞凶。

六五爻,田猎有收获,当臣下纷争时利于公平公正地裁判,不会有过错。长子统率军队出征,弟子出征大败而回,伤亡甚众,凶险。

Six in the fifth place: There is game in the field. It furthers one to seize them. No blame. The eldest son leads the army. Younger men carry corpses. Perseverance brings misfortune.

Fifth yin line: Hunting yields game; when ministers quarrel, it is beneficial to judge fairly and justly; no fault. The eldest son leads the army; the younger son returns defeated with many casualties; danger.

Line 6

上六,大君有命,开国承家,小人勿用。

上六爻,君王有令,分封诸侯,赏赐大夫,不要任用小人。

Six at the top: The great king issues commands, founds states, vests families with fiefs. Inferior people should not be employed.

Top yin line: The king issues orders, enfeoffs lords, and rewards ministers; do not employ petty people.
