Lin - Approaching

Meaning and Overview

The hexagram of *Lin* (Approach) is opposite to that of *Dun* (Retreat). In *Dun*, the bottom two lines are yin, while the remaining four above are yang. In *Lin*, the bottom two lines of the inner trigram are yang, and the remaining four above are yin. From the perspective of the inner trigram growing upward, *Lin* encourages the development and growth of yang lines, which is also opposite to *Dun*'s effort to control the development of yin lines. In *Lin*, the first nine (initial nine), second nine, sixth five, and top six are all auspicious lines. As the yang lines develop, the yin lines in the upper trigram also benefit. The third six and fourth six lines are without fault, and there is not a single inauspicious line in the entire hexagram. The third six rides over the second nine; although yin rides over yang, the third six yin line welcomes the development of yang lines, so there is no error. The fourth six also represents "approaching directly," welcoming development with the first nine yang line; yin and yang respond to each other, so there is no fault. The Tuan commentary explains the upward development of the two firm lines at the bottom of the lower trigram: "Approach: the firm gradually grows, is pleasing and compliant, and the firm is centered and responsive. Great success through correctness is the way of heaven. 'By the eighth month there will be misfortune' means it will not last long." This further explains that the core of the Lin hexagram lies in the gradual growth and dominance of yang force, but it also warns of the natural law that extremes lead to decline, reminding the noble person to follow the way of heaven, balance strength with gentleness, and thus achieve lasting prosperity.
