Hexagram 27

Yi (Nourishment) - The Corners of the Mouth

Meaning and Overview

The hexagram Yi (Nourishment) has the upper trigram Gen, representing stillness, and the lower trigram Zhen, representing movement. The image symbolizes the human mouth: when biting food, the upper jaw remains still while the lower jaw moves. Thus, this hexagram is closely related to food and nurturing life. For humanity, 'food is the first necessity of the people,' so obtaining nourishment is the foremost matter for survival and reproduction.
