Hexagram 25
Wú Wàng - Innocence / Unexpectedness
无妄
Meaning and Overview
The hexagram Wú Wàng (Innocence) has the upper trigram Qián (Heaven) and the lower trigram Zhèn (Thunder), forming the image of Heaven over Thunder. This hexagram is generally auspicious, though it deals with unexpected events; even if there is an unforeseen illness, it can be cured without medicine. It discusses how to handle unexpected situations, testing our wisdom. The constant path (jīng) is the norm, while the expedient path (quán) is adaptation; the Book of Changes embodies the constant within change, and change within the constant. Even when encountering the unexpected, one should not panic but follow nature. The hexagram statement introduces the concept of Heavenly mandate (tiānmìng); humans must recognize it, though it is difficult to grasp yet crucial. Confucius said, 'At fifty, I knew the mandate of Heaven,' and 'Without knowing the mandate, one cannot be a gentleman.' He believed that one who does not know Heaven's mandate is unworthy of being a gentleman. The Commentary on the Image explains: 'The firm comes from without and becomes master within, moving and strong, the firm in the center responds, great success through correctness—this is Heaven's mandate.' The fifth line (yang in the central yang position) and the second line (yin in the central yin position) correspond, thus 'the firm in the center responds, great success through correctness' belongs to the realm of Heaven's mandate. If not correct, disaster follows, making action unfavorable. The Image says that without centrality and correctness, Heaven's mandate will not protect.
Line Interpretations
These passages include the core hexagram statement, the six moving line texts, and traditional commentary where available. Read them as layered guidance: the early lines describe the root of the situation, while later lines reveal development, pressure, and outcome.

The Commentary says: Innocence: The firm comes from without and becomes master within, moving and strong, the firm in the center responds, great success through correctness—this is Heaven's mandate. If not correct, there is calamity; it is not favorable to undertake anything. Where can one go with innocence? If Heaven's mandate does not bless, can one act?
The Commentary says: In the hexagram Innocence, the firm line at the beginning comes from without and becomes the ruling line of the inner trigram; the inner trigram is Zhen (movement), the outer is Qian (strength). The fifth line, firm and central, responds to the second line, yielding and central. Great success through correctness is the manifestation of Heaven's mandate. If the mandate is not correct, there is calamity, and it is not favorable to proceed. Where can one go with an incorrect mandate? If Heaven does not bless, can one succeed?
