Hexagram 34

Great Power - Dazhuang

大壮

Meaning and Overview

The hexagram Dazhuang (Great Power) consists of the upper trigram Zhen (Thunder) and the lower trigram Qian (Heaven), forming the image of thunder above heaven, symbolizing great strength. The yang lines ascend and become excessively strong, hence the name 'Great Power.' The hexagram statement is simple, consisting only of 'Li Zhen' (advantageous to be steadfast and correct). Because yang energy is excessive, the hexagram lines consider adhering to the central and correct path as auspicious, and yielding and retreating as auspicious. The second line, a yang line in a yin position, occupies the central place and shows yielding, thus 'steadfast and correct, auspicious.' Similarly, the fourth line, a yang line in a yin position, indicates yielding and retreat, thus 'steadfast and correct, auspicious; regret vanishes.' The top line, occupying a high position, experiences hardship before achieving a favorable outcome. It speaks of a ram charging forcefully into a hedge, becoming trapped in a dilemma. Of course, yielding and caution are advocated. The first line, 'power in the toes,' denotes restless and reckless advance, thus 'going forward brings misfortune.' The first line is a yang line in a yang position, indicating restlessness. The third line also says, 'the inferior man uses his strength,' a yang line in a yang position, prone to rash action; 'the superior man uses no strength,' and thus avoids trouble. The fifth line, 'loses the sheep in the field, no regret,' a yin line in a yang position, though occupying the central place, still loses the sheep. Because Dazhuang represents excessive yang energy, both trigrams are in motion—Qian moves and Zhen moves—yang energy continues to develop upward. Therefore, the hexagram statement and line texts all warn against restless and reckless advance, advocating caution and care, essentially pursuing the doctrine of the mean to achieve a balance of yin and yang in the lines.
